G'day and welcome to The Campers Atlas!
Thanks for joining in and we hope this great website will help turn your average camping trip into something special.
Here's a quick overview of how to use and get the most out of the map and the forum.
The Map.
The main page is a map of (nearly) every Campground in Australia. These are DEC/DPAW, Local Shire, State Forest/Conservation Parks, Privately Owned campgrounds and Road Side Rest Areas. They are chosen as a desirable place to go camping for a couple of weeks over the school holidays, or for a couple of days as you travel around Australia and are Free or low cost campsites with something new and exciting to see and do nearby. Even the Road Side Rest Areas that appear on the map are ones that are near a point of interest like a river, away from traffic noise and not just a car park right next to a highway. As time permits I will continue to add photo's and a video for each and every campground so you can see what each place is like and choose the right one for you and your size rig/set up!
Other Maps Still To Come.
More maps will appear over time focusing on other aspects of camping and travelling around Australia. There will be a Caravan Park map with all the relevant information on caravan parks. A Four Wheel Drive Tracks and Treks map giving you ideas and information for the next out back adventure or weekend away on the tracks with your 4x4. A Glamping map for those special occasions or a once in a life time fishing trip to one of the most mind blowingly remote and beautiful, untouched parts of Australia; at a price. A dedicated Road Side Rest Areas map just for those quick over nighter's when you don't care where you stop for the night. And an Ancillary map showing sundries such as where chemical dump points can be located, where you can find authorised fire wood collection points, locations of caravan repairers, tourist information centres and the like.
Getting The Most Out Of The Map.
Filter Function.
Once you've found your way around by clicking on the markers, finding the related information and zooming in on specific campgrounds; you can also use the Filter function by clicking on a specific filter or filters that suit your style of travel. Highlight one or more of the check boxes and it will automatically remove any campgrounds that does not meet the requirements. For example if you must have a flushing toilet, need to be able to take your dog, have a Campfire and you have an on-road caravan; click on each of those check boxes and see only those campgrounds which meets those requirements. Note: Unless you highlight the "Free" check box, the campgrounds will be low cost with a small camping fee usually payable at an onsite honour box, unless there is an Online Booking system which can be found through the "Booking Link".
Adding/Modifying Campgrounds.
Now you've joined in you can also Modify existing campgrounds to fix any mistakes (never) or make changes (more likely). Simply hit the "Modify" button and change away. You can even add photos if you like. Bear in mind though that all changes will be reviewed and approved by admin prior to being published.
To Add A New Campground, simply hit the "- NEW" button and then 'click and drag' the pin at the top to where the campground is on the map and then fill in the details, add photos and even a video of the campsite. ( Only if it's a YouTube link ) Video links from your computer won't work.
Please note while every effort has been made to provide the correct information (trust me a lot of phone calls were made to various State Government departments, Shire offices,
Private homesteads, and countless hours of research), some mistakes will have been made. I'm only human...... And changes to currently correct information will also happen. Please take all information as A GUIDE ONLY and safely enjoy your travels with your "common sense cap" securely screwed on. It's a huge, largely un populated, unforgiving country out there.
Search Bar.
Just start typing in the first few letters of a campground name you know and a list will appear of campgrounds that start with those letters. Note: No need for capitals or the word "The". Click on the desired campground name and it will zoom in on that campground and bring up it's details.
Navigation Function.
Hit the "Navigate" button then click on "Add Location" and you can type in your home address then click on the campground pin on the map you want to go to and hit the "Navigate" button down the bottom and it will make a route for you showing direction, time and distance. You can then add as many campgrounds as you like by clicking on each pin on the map and hitting "Navigate" and then "Saving" your "trip planner" for later use or modification. Ultimately you could create a trip planner using the "Navigate" function in conjunction with the "Filter" function that will enable you to travel around Australia with your pet and camp every night for free (for example), while knowing exactly how far and how long to drive between each campground!
